Cruise For a Cure 2011
Right after the 2011 Edition of The 26.2 mile run with Donna!
Local Cruise Planners Agency Owner Creates “Cruise For A Cure”
When Connie Saunders, owner of “Your Cruise Agents” a local “Cruise Planners” Franchise, lost her good friend to Breast Cancer, she decided to give more than just a one time donation.
“It all started when my good friend Deneen Goetz, at just 29 years old, was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer, We were pretty close friends as we were both Sales Directors with Mary Kay Cosmetics. I watched Deneen fight her battle and stayed pretty close to her as she went thru the ups and downs of treatment." Connie added, “When Deneen passed away, they asked for donations to the Donna Hicken Foundation in lieu of flowers. I am not sure how the Donna Hicken Foundation helped Deneen during her fight, but I know that the foundation helps women on the FirstCoast who are battling the fight of their life with this awful disease.”
At the services for the loss of her good friend Deneen, she remembered her own Mother's diagnosis (of Breast Cancer) when Connie was just 16 years old and began to think about how she could give more than just a one time donation. So she worked with Carnival Cruise Lines, Sales Development Director, Loretta Walenski, to create, “A Cruise For A Cure.”
“Loretta and I worked with Julie Terrazzano, Director of the Donna Hicken Foundation, to come up with a great 4 night weekend cruise in October, which is “Breast Cancer Month.” that we could all promote. We knew there would be so much excitement about the newer bigger ship that came to Jacksonville. “The sailing, October 9-13th, 2008, was one of the first cruises to leave out of Jacksonville, on the Carnival Fascination!” in late September,” added Connie.
"Your Cruise Agents" and Carnival Cruise Lines partnered in this fundraiser and will give a substantial donation to the foundation for each cabin that sailed! There was also a cocktail party on board the ship to celebrate a "Cruise for a Cure."
Mona Stitchalk, organizer for the local MeetUp.com group, “Jax Travel & Activity Group” helped to promote the cruise as well because she agreed that not only is this a great cruise for the Travel MeetUp Group, but it is for a great cause. Her group sailed in October 2008, and had such a great time, they wanted to do it again. This October, her group has embraced the “Cruise For A Cure” and they had a terrific time on this cruise too!
Over 100 people were booked for the October cruise, mostly all of whom are from the Jacksonville area. Said Connie, “The community has really embraced this cruise, so much that we decided to do another one in 2009.”
So in February 2009, right after the “26.2 with Donna” marathon, we sailed again. This cruise was opened for runners and their families from all over the world who came to Jacksonville for the marathon and then left the next day for their 5 night cruise!
Last year’s marathon drew over 7000 runners to the FirstCoast and hopes to draw even more runners in 2011. You can find out more about both fundraiser cruises at Connie’s website: www.YourCruiseAgents.com.
2011 Will mark be our 3rd cruise from Jacksonville to benefit the Donna Foundation. The race is on Sunday, Feb, 13, and the cruise is Monday, Feb 14th.
Please join us for this terrific cause!
